Mavixen (Glecaprevir 100 mg & Pibrentasvir 40 mg) is a combined medication used to treat hepatitis C virus and all genotypes 1 through 6 without cirrhosis and with compensated cirrhosis in adults and children above 12 years of age. Combinedly they inhibit NS3/4A and NS5A enzymes in hepatitis C that stimulate virus replicating RNA into DNA. Why is it used?

Primarily it is used to treat HCV virus infection without cirrhosis and with compensated cirrhosis in genotype 1,2,3,4,5 and 6. It is also used to treat HCV genotype 1 infection in patients who have taken treatment before with either NS5A or NS3/4A protease inhibitors but not with the both.

How does it work in HCV patients?

Glecaprevir and Pibrentasvir targets NS3/4A and NS5A enzymes in viral RNA, by blocking those enzymes, these two direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) works mutually stopping hepatitis C virus from replicating and producing new infectious viral particles. How this dual mechanism allows for effective treatment across all major genotypes in HCV.

  • Adequate studies have not been performed if children younger than 3 years of age can be benefitted by this medication. Safety and efficacy also have not been established.
  • There is not enough data available on pregnant women for using Mavixen about the risk of unborn baby. 
  • Using this hepatitis C therapy for breastfeeding women is also not recommended for not having enough studies on that or the risk is unknown for infants. If the potential risk is higher than the outcome it is recommended not to use.
